Private medical insurance – Answer 3 questions

Choosing your policy – 3 easy steps

Firstly, you should be aware that private medical insurance won′t cover you for treatment of conditions you already had when you took out your policy. It is designed to cover you for new medical conditions that arise after you join.

To help you decide which policy suits your needs best, simply answer the following questions:

1. Do you want to declare your medical history?

Consider a fully medically underwritten policy – which means:

  • You′ll need to complete a medical declaration form that will enable us to decide whether any medical conditions need to be excluded from your cover.
  • You′ll know exactly what you are and are not covered for, when you take out your policy.
  • You′ll start without a no claims discount. This can be more expensive initially, but if you claim, it won′t affect your price at renewal.

With this option you can get a quote online, but will need to speak to us to buy a policy.

Consider a moratorium policy – which means:

With this option you can buy online and get a 5% discount!

2. Would you like to limit your cover to things such as hospital stays and operations – which will reduce your premium? Or would you like to also include cover for out–patient treatment?

Choose a policy that does not include cover for out-patient treatment.Treatment given at a hospital, consulting room or out-patient clinic where you do not go in for day-patient or in-patient treatment

  • Your policy will be less expensive because the level of benefit is limited.
  • If your GP refers you to see a consultant or specialist, such as a physiotherapist, you will have to pay for this yourself. This could cost around £120 for a consultant and £35 for a physiotherapist.
  • You will still be covered for diagnostic scans such as MRI, CT and PET.

Choose a policy that includes cover for out–patient treatment

You will be covered for up to £800 each year for out–patient treatment.

Which level of out-patient cover would you like?

It could cost around £120 for a consultant or specialist and £35 for a physiotherapist.

3. Would you be willing to be treated under the NHS if treatment were available within six weeks of the date when your treatment is due to take place? This will reduce your premium.

Choose our 6 Week Option

  • Choosing this can help to reduce your premium.
  • If treatment is not available within six weeks, you′ll go private straight away.

No need to wait for treatment

  • This is likely to add more to your policy cost, but will provide you with prompt access to eligible private medical treatment, whenever you need it.
